The Randomizer!

"And why haven't you gotten that sickness looked at yet?" Blake retorted, keeping his gaze forward.

Salene took a quick look around her room. "Alright, I'll join you. I also want to see which two people are the dangerous ones." She finished off her drink and took a deep breath. "Now that this infernal coughing is gone, I feel much better."

Evangeline smiled sweetly. "Wonderful. I too am curious to see these dangerous humans and to hear about how you gained your power. So that drink has healing properties?"

She slowly began to exit the room. She paused briefly to look at the window behind her. The sun was still in the process of setting. "Oh my, it's nearly dark. We must be careful. This mansion will be a very different place after nightfall. You see, this is the mansion's master's anniversary."

"It's nothing serious. It'll go away in a few hours . . . or days." Kaien looked around and spotted the butler up ahead. "Hey, there's the butler." He walked up to the butler and tapped him on the shoulder.

"...Or days," Blake sighed, running a hand over his face. He watched as Kaien walked over to the butler and frowned.

"Is it now? I didn't know. Would you care to tell me the story?" She looked back towards the window and saw the sun setting quickly. "Perhaps something will happen tonight."

"It is no coincidence that we all arrived here, in this nearly abandoned mansion." Evangeline adjusted her glasses. "You see, this mansion attracts the abnormal--both magical creatures and those who carry strong negative emotions. That is not random, you see dear, but thanks to the so-called 'late' master's influence. The master of this mansion really isn't dead at all. He's a vampire of a sort. A vampire who feeds on guilt and magic, which are surprisingly similar. Anyone, besides the guests, who lives in this mansion is either a ghost, a vampire, or someone who lacked guilt, so he or she was turned into a mindless human slave, only carrying out the master's wishes."

She cleared her throat. "The master of this mansion--and most of his vampiric servants--has been imprisoned for 500 years thanks to a very...a very noble man, but the spell binding him breaks this evening, thus his need to attract guests--for food. We are not the only hungry ones."

"Hey! It'll go away eventually!" he snapped back towards Blake. He turned his attention back to the butler and tapped him on the shoulder again. "Excuse me sir?" The butler ignored Kaien and simply continued on his way. "What the heck was that all about?!"

Blake watched the butler walk away, frowning suspiciously.

"Well, that's odd," he muttered, cupping his chin in thought. And a bit worrisome, he added mentally.

"I guess we better be careful tonight. Who knows who is going to fall prey to this master and his servants." Salene chuckled a bit and looked around. "They may even be watching us now, waiting for the perfect chance to strike."

Evangeline smiled gently, glancing out the window again. "The sun will set within ten minutes," she stated. "If you think anyone else here deserves to be saved, we should go to them now."

"I'm going to follow that butler and give him a piece of my mind!" Kaien started marching after him before he started coughing. "I hate this sickness!"

Blake watched Kaien walk ahead, eyes moving towards the shadows when he heard something move. He took a glance at the other man before walking off. There was something in this mansion that was beginning to make him uneasy.

"Frankly, I don't know anyone else here. I don't know if there's anyone worth saving or not." Salene watched the hall as the sun began to set. The light was getting dimmer and dimmer. "Shouldn't the butler come and light the halls? Unless they want everyone to walk in the dark."

"That's precisely what they want. Darkness. Under dark's cover, they can pick off their victims one by one." Evangeline exited the room and slowly made her way down the hallway. She took out a lighter and began to light each lamp as she walked. "We'll fare better with at least some light. Any light we want we have to make ourselves."

"Hey Blake, do you think you could . . ." he turned around to see him gone. "Nevermind. Jerk." Kaien took a deep breath and looked around. It's getting dark. For some reason the air around the mansion seemed different and filled with hostility.

Blake walked down the hall, whistling as he removed the blade from his pocket, looking around warily. He stopped when he heard someone scream, quickly running to where the source of the sound came from.

Salene let out a long sigh. "So we better find something to defend ourselves. Who knows when they'll strike." She looked around and found a suit of armor holding a spear. She walked over to it and managed to pry the spear out of its hands. "I suggest you find a weapon yourself, if you want to survive tonight."

She chuckled. "Oh my, dearie, I wouldn't dream of using a sword." Evangeline walked ahead, into the growing shadows, as her lighter clicked off. "Oh dear." The only sign of her existence was the snapping sound as she tried to start the lighter again. Night finally settled into the mansion, with only a few lit candles and torches around the halls to guide the guests. Evangeline herself was completely in the shadows.

There came a creaking noise from somewhere below and a roar.

Ravens fluttered through the mansion, some landing on the carpet and turning into seemingly human creatures. Fortunately for the nun and the fortuneteller, the raven beings were far down the hallway from them.

Unfortunately, one of the butlers was quite close.

"Ah, mademoiselle," the grey-haired man greeted Salene, emerging from the shadows on the opposite end of the hall from where Evangeline's lighter sounds could still be heard. "Are you quite all right? There is something unusual going on in the mansion, I fear. You should really come with me. We'll go to the kitchens or the basement, where we have electricity."

Kaien looked around carefully while pulling out a dagger that was strapped to his leg. Things were definitely suspicious here. Now, he needs to stay on guard at all times.

A maid giggled lightly and appeared infront of Blake. "Excuse me honorable guest, but it is not safe here. Allow me to escort you to the kitchen."

Blake stopped at that, eying the maid warily. He smiled. "Why, no thank you. I'm afraid that I'll have to decline." The redhead held up the blade. "Not unless you show me what you really are."

"My~ Someone looks as though they're all alone tonight," a sweet voice purr from up above Kaien. Peering down at him are a bright pair of silver eyes, glinting in the darkness.

Salene scowled at the butler. "I'm afraid I'll have to decline. I can handle myself." She clenched her hands around the spear tighter. "If you think that disguise will fool me, then you have another thing coming. I may be a simple fortune-teller, but my gifts allow me to see through you." She raised the spear up. "Where's your master?"


A butler tapped Evangeline on the shoulder. "Miss, it's dangerous here. Allow me escort you to a safer location. We'll remove the ravens as soon as we can." He didn't give Evangeline time to answer as he started pushing her towards the end of the hall.

The lighter flickered on and dropped to the ground, followed by Evangeline. The nun fell face first onto the floor, but did not make the large thumping sound one might expect a corpse to make. The lighter's flame caught what seemed to be a type of liquid that Evangeline had emitted from her cane earlier during her walk down the hallway, and it burned on a clear path down the hallway, lighting up the area much more.

The butler by Salene had been partially monitoring his colleague, who he was facing as the other butler escorted Evangeline. When he saw the light, his eyes widened, but it wasn't much of a danger to him, so that was not his primary concern. He swallowed. "It's skin! It's only skin!"

Indeed, the nun's body was entirely flat, like the skin a snake sheds periodically.

A raven evidently heard the shouting and flew up to the hallway, landing and transforming into her semi-human form simultaneously. "What is this nonsense?" She spotted the skin and growled, grabbing the butler by his collar. "You fool! That's skin shed by an ubervampire!"

"I don't know what that is!" The butler sobbed, just before a clawed hand reached out and removed his head from his body.

A woman with short auburn hair emerged from the few remaining shadows, licking the oddly-colored blood off her fingernails. "It's really the only way to travel during the day, my dear. Dress in a corpse, prevent the sun from melting you! Plus I've a man I love"--here she giggled girlishly--"and he hasn't quite figured out about my nature yet. I was so fortunate to stumble upon this mansion though, filled with delicious vampires who feed on guilt and magic. I haven't found any vampires as pure as your crowd in centuries."

The raven shrieked, signaling that she would need help, and immediately lunged towards Salene, hoping that feasting on a creature with magical abilities would give her enough of a power boost to battle the ubervampire.

Kaien looked around carefully. "Show yourself!" He raised up his dagger a bit. He knew it was a bad decision to stay at this place. Now he's going to have to fight for his life. He scoffed lightly. Fight for his life? He has to do that every waking day.
